Mounting a TV and Can't Find a Stud? Here's What Actually Holds
Studs are 16 inches apart, and your TV is rarely exactly where you want it centered on one. Here's the real difference between a stud mount and an anchor mount, and when each one is actually fine.
This is the most common assembly and installation call we get, and it usually starts the same way: someone bought a wall mount, found a stud on one side of where they want the TV, couldn't find a second one in the right spot, and either drilled into drywall alone or called us before making that decision. Good instinct, because the second option is where a lot of DIY TV mounts actually go wrong.
A stud is solid wood framing behind the drywall, typically spaced 16 inches apart, and it can hold real weight because the screw is biting into something structural. Plain drywall, on the other hand, is about half an inch of gypsum board. A screw driven straight into drywall with nothing behind it has almost no pull-out strength. Put a 50-plus pound TV on a mounting arm that puts leverage on that connection every time someone bumps it or adjusts the angle, and it's genuinely a matter of when it fails, not if.
The mistake we see most: two studs, one guess
Most full-motion and tilting mounts have four mounting points, and the safest setup catches at least two of those points on real studs. What we actually see a lot is someone finding one stud, assuming the second mounting hole "should" land on the next one 16 inches over, and it just doesn't line up, so they fill the gap with a standard drywall anchor rated for a picture frame, not a 45-pound television with a tilting arm putting leverage on it every time it moves.

- If a mount genuinely can't land on two studs, the anchor has to be rated for the TV's real weight, not a generic multi-purpose one
For a lighter TV, roughly 32 inches or under with a fixed (non-tilting) mount, a proper heavy-duty toggle-style anchor rated for 50-plus pounds per anchor, used at all four points, is a legitimate, safe setup. The mistake isn't using anchors at all. It's mixing one stud, one weak anchor, and a heavier tilting mount, which is exactly the combination that shows up in the falling-TV videos.
The other thing people miss: what's actually behind the wall
Beyond studs, we routinely find electrical wiring, HVAC ducting, or plumbing lines running through a wall exactly where someone wants to drill, especially near an existing outlet that was added for the TV setup itself. A stud finder that also flags wiring, and a quick visual check before drilling, is a cheap five extra minutes that avoids a genuinely expensive mistake.
